In the Church of England, baptism (often called christening) is a sacrament that welcomes a person, child or adult, into the Christian family and marks the start of a lifelong journey of faith with God. It involves promises made to follow Christ, the pouring of water, and the community’s promise to support the individual. The ceremony is a joyful occasion to celebrate God’s gift of life and a commitment to a new life in Christ.

Both adults and children can be baptised. Adults will make their own promises to God, parents of children who are not old enough to make those promises make the promises on their child’s behalf.
Baptism is an important event, so preparation is important and one of our ministers will meet with you to explain the service and its implications.
- You may request your parish priest to baptise your children into membership of the Christian Church and they will be very pleased to do so.
- You will be required to make a commitment to bring them up in the Christian way, and to state that you believe in God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
- We encourage you to be regular attenders (once a month) of our Church, but this is not a requirement.
- Everything will be explained to you simply and clearly, and all the help you need will be given before, during and after the Baptism Service.
- We baptise during our main service at 10am, as Baptism is a welcome into the family of God.
- Being a Christian is no soft option in this day and age, but with the help of the worship, teaching and fellowship provided by the local Church it can be done!
